We were horrified to learn that there are movements in The Gambia to lift the ban on female genital mutilation, which has only been in force since 2015.
We have written a letter to the Prime Minister to use all his power to prevent this. This step backwards would not only put The Gambia in a bad light, it would continue to expose girls and women to great pain and mutilation and we also fear that the work in and for our school would be indirectly jeopardised.
After careful consideration, we have refrained from publishing personal statements from students and teachers of the school, as we fear that they may then be exposed to reprisals in their communities. Teachers and pupils at the school are opposed to this change in the law.
